Interview with Yann Couedor
/
Before being an artist, Yann Couedor is a great music lover and collector. This is mainly where he draws his inspiration from, although he is particularly fascinated by other fields such as movies and pop art. This is what led him to represent on its own way artists and personalities that have marked him. He paints with acrylic and likes to compose with collage. His initial idea being to stick authentic elements in relation with the character he chooses to paint ( newspaper articles , vinyl records cover, photos, CD etc purchased at auctions). In 2013, he published his first book » Lissen2myART » published by Indeez . A book that exposes his works, and traces eight-year of his career starting from its beginnings in 2004 until 2012. Through perseverance in communicating about his work, he made the fateful encounters that will lead him to exhibit his artwork in France and abroad.
Hi Yann, today you selected for MoW 5 of your artworks inspired by music. Can you tell MoW why you chose those music artists ? What was the music behind the artworks ? What inspired you to create them ?
I'm a music lover, especially afro american music from the 70's to nowadays, this explains my choices. Those artists constantly inspire me by their art, life experiences and what they've brought in to the history of music.
Why is music important to you and your art?
Music is what drives me since I was a child, back then I would rather buy cds than any fashionable clothes or games. Since then I've become a collector.
If you had to choose between the artworks presented today, which of your artwork would be your favorite ? And why ?
My favorite artwork changes depending on the day, the mood ... today i'd say the Justin Timberlake one. I'm actually working on a series around Timbaland collabs.
Can you tell MoW more about the techniques you used. How old is your technique? How did it start? How long does it take you to make an artwork?
I use fine brushes and acrylic since the beginning (2004), collage ( magazines, cds booklets, vinyls cover, etc) Artwork can take me one week to 2 months, it depends on the project and the size. I paint on linen canvas or cardboard.
Do you have plans on creating new artworks insipired by music?
Yes, as long as I will listen to music... music is why I paint today, and the main subject of my paintings.
Do you listen to music when you’re working ? If so, what kind of music ?
Always.... mainly Soul, RnB, Hip hop, but also artist like Bjork that I particulary love.
What is the song you liked the most lately? The album ? What was the last gig you went to?
The album that I never left since the beginning of this year: Days + Nights by DALEY, his voice is amazing.
My last concerts: D'Angelo, Beyonce, Miguel, Bjork
Are you a musician yourself ?
I wish I was. I tried to make music myself but you quickly know when things are not made for you
