Mydeadpony is a self-taught artist. His approach to illustration and watercolor is influenced by fashion, street art and graffiti. Combining digital media, painting and doodles, his collages, composed of water colors, stains and textures are extremely detailed images, both precise and airy.
Hi Mydeadpony, today you selected for MoW 2 of your artworks inspired by music. Can you tell MoW how music inspired them? What was the music behind the artworks ? What inspired you to create them ?
The Pink metal noise was inspired by my love for heavy, loud & noisy music in general and I thought it would be funny to contrast it with pink somehow.
Lost control was somehow inspired by Joy Division and all the cold wave, minimal bands I have listened to.
Why is music important to you and your art?
I think they are complimentary in some ways. Music sometimes serves as a background score to help me figure out ideas but it's not necessary for me to be inspired by music to start something new.
If you had to choose between the artworks presented today, which of your artwork would be your favorite ? And why ?
Hard to say really, I like them both for what they are when I made them. They both represent different sides of musical genres that I like to listen to.
Can you tell MoW more about the techniques you used. How old is your technique? How did it start? How long does it take you to make an artwork?
I just use Photoshop with my own textures. It's really not complicated technically, just layers, PS brushes, layer modes, masks, gradients and so on.
For these ones I had the title before starting to work on the illustration so it helps to keep me focused on the general idea, even if while I am working on it, it can morph into something else in the end.
I've been doing illustrations for at least 12 years now but my technique evolved with time and I still learn new things to incorporate on a regular basis.
I think it took me a few days for each but I am not working constantly as I usually browse the net at the same time.
Do you have plans on creating new artworks insipired by music ?
No plans for the moment but I'd like to work for some bands or artists if I would enjoy their music.
Do you listen to music when you’re working ? If so, what kind of music ?
Not all the time, I do enjoy silence as well, that makes music special when I listen to it.
I listen to so many different kind of music, from classical to jazz, hardcore, metal, post punk, electronic, minimal wave, ethnic and the list goes on and on. I don't really care about a specific genre, I am more interested in listening to music that resonates with me but I tend to listen to alternative kind of music most often, never top 10 kind of stuff.
What is the song you liked the most lately? The album ? What was the last gig you went to ?
Norma Jean "Sword in mouth, fire eyes"
As for the album I am listening a lot to Touché Amoré "Is Survived by"
And I haven't been in a show for ten years or so. I have a child now and I'd rather stay home with a cup of tea.
Are you a musician yourself ?
Not really although I dabble in electronic music now and then. I am just trying to figure out how I could make something that is personal instead of copying what I hear but it's a long road to learn how to do that. I have found it with my illustrations so I just need to find the same approach in music as well but it might never happen.
