Interview with Cyrcle

Back in October 2013, after traveling for most of the last year, Los Angeles street art collective Cyrcle were excited to come back to their home and do « something big ». And they did !
Inspired by Woodkid's latest album "The Golden Age", Cyrcle created a piece using WOODKID‘s music and aesthetic as inspiration. . A monster wall located on Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland in Hollywood.
Can you tell MoW more about this piece?
The piece is inspired by the story and concept behind Woodkid’s first album, Golden Age. The woodblock imagery is integrated with text to tell the story of RUN BOY. We took the aesthetic of his videos, and created our version his world. The Woman, on the left of the mural, represents the Boys mother. She is longing for the child she once held in her arms. She is worried about his safety and wellbeing as he ventures out into the world. The Warriors represent monsters and obstacles he faces along his journey. »
What inspired you in Woodkid’s music ?
Woodkid’s music has spoken to us since we first heard “Iron” over a year ago. He’s not just a musician, or a directer, or a designer… He’s an artist all the way- love that shit about him! We connect deeply with the Boy in his story, forging our way as artists, navigating and overcoming the monsters of Los Angeles, and the world! Try, Fail, TryUMPH. Ultimately we strive for happiness and success through our work. Faith, courage, honor, power and growth. Runboy RUN!
The mural was painted with strict use of black, white and gold — core colors of The Golden Age‘s cover art. Can you tell MoW more about the techniques you used. How old is your technique? How did it start?
Spray cans, bushes and rollers. The design was a collaboration with WOODKID so his album and the story he tells played a strong role in the piece’s conceptualization. Instead of using the visuals he created for his videos we found inspiration in Greek woodcut prints from the 1800s which we appropriated to create the piece.
How long did it take you to make the piece?
A week.
Why is music important to you and your art?
Music, like all other art forms, inspires life.
Do you have plans on creating new artworks insipired by music ?
Nothing in stone yet.

In general, do you listen to music when your working ? If so what kind of music?
Yep. Justin Beiber, One Direction and Katy Perry mostly… ;) Fuck off, that’s an impossible question.
What is the song you liked the most lately?
“An Awseome Wave” by Alt-J and “Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors” by Big Boi were two of our favorite albums in 2013.
Right now as we’re responding to this interview (sitting in a hotel in Vegas), sipping Jameson and ginger ale in coffee mugs, we’re digging “Groove Me” by King Floyd.
